Do I Have Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a potentially life-threatening disorder that can raise your blood pressure, cause constant fatigue, and put your at a greater risk for stroke. But many people with sleep apnea are unaware that they have it, because the primary symptoms only occur when you are asleep. Most cases are diagnosed when a patient’s snoring becomes so loud that it is a problem for their spouse, but people who live alone lack a similar warning.

At Dentonics’s Pittsburgh dental practice, we see plenty of sleep apnea patients who only figured out there was something wrong after long periods of chronic fatigue. To help people who may have this disorder, we’ve compiled a list of warning signs that can possibly indicate whether or not you suffer from sleep apnea.

People with sleep apnea are likely to:

  • Wake up from a full night’s sleep feeling unrested
  • Wake up several times a night, often feeling short of breath
  • Wake up with a headache, sore throat, and dry mouth
  • Feel tired all day
  • Experience irritability and mood swings

If three or more of these symptoms apply to you, you may have sleep apnea, and should take a sleep test as soon as possible in order to get a definite diagnosis. Once you know you have the disorder, you can begin looking at treatment options, of which there are quite a few.

If you have any other questions about sleep apnea or its symptoms, you should set up an appointment with our Pittsburgh sleep apnea specialists right away. Call Dentonics at 412-487-6910 to schedule your consultation today.
