Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

If you’re an adult who is seeking to replace a missing tooth or missing teeth, chances are you’re a good candidate for dental implants.

There are some factors that may prevent dental implants from being right for you, including certain health conditions. During your consultation with the Pittsburgh implant dentists at Dentonics, we will conduct a detailed oral health examination and thoroughly review your medical history to determine if dental implants are right for you.

Generally speaking, dental implants are an ideal teeth replacement solution for all people except children, whose jawbones are still developing. Adult patients who lack the jawbone density necessary to anchor dental implants may need to undergo bone grafting prior to receiving dental implants.

If the Pittsburgh dentists at Dentonics believe that dental implants are not the best treatment for your missing teeth, we may recommend another option such as dentures or dental bridges. Because the successful placement of dental implants requires two procedures—including an outpatient surgical procedure—between three and six months apart, dental implants are usually not advised for:

  • Women during pregnancy
  • Patients undergoing radiation treatment
  • Patients with certain chronic diseases or immune deficiencies
  • Patients taking certain medications that suppress the immune system
  • Smokers who are not willing to quit
