Am I at Risk for Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common and dangerous condition in which a person’s breathing stops periodically during sleep, and it does not discriminate based on age, gender or ethnicity.

If you or a loved one suffers from chronic snoring or other symptoms of sleep apnea, the Pittsburgh dentists at Dentonics may be able to help you restore healthy, restful sleep. If not treated, sleep apnea can increase your risk for severe health complications including high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.

Sleep apnea is thought to affect more than 20 million Americans, from young children to the elderly. While anyone can develop sleep apnea, studies indicate it is more common among men and those over the age of 35.

Other factors that indicate an increased risk for sleep apnea include:

  • Excessive weight
  • Deviated septum or nasal obstructions
  • Family history of sleep apnea
  • Large neck circumference
  • Regular alcohol consumption or sedative use
  • Smoking
  • Narrow throat or airway
  • Enlarged tonsils or adenoids

There are a number of sleep apnea treatment options available. Many patients with sleep apnea benefit from the use of a custom-made oral appliance, which is similar to a sports mouthguard and is designed to help you maintain an open airway as you sleep.

If you would like to learn more about sleep apnea diagnosis and treatment, please contact Dentonics to schedule your personal consultation with Dr. Joe Quartuccio or Dr. Charles Frye. Our dentists welcome patients from Allison Park and the greater Pittsburgh area.
