Questions about Dental Bridges

SERVING PITTSBURGH, ALLISON PARK, AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS OF PENNSYLVANIA

If you have missing teeth but are not a candidate for dental implants, Pittsburgh dentists, Dr. Joe or Dr. Charles Frye may recommend a custom dental bridge.

Following are the answers to some commonly asked questions about dental bridges.

What exactly is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge consists of one or more false teeth that are supported by a bridge, which is anchored to your adjacent existing teeth with dental crowns. The false teeth and crowns are custom crafted from porcelain to look, feel and function like your natural teeth.

When are dental bridges a better solution than dental implants?

While dental implants are generally the strongest and most aesthetically pleasing treatment for missing teeth, dental bridges are often a good solution for patients who lack sufficient bone structure to support implants or who have certain medical conditions that prevent them from undergoing the surgical dental implant procedure.

How long do dental bridges last?

Depending on the extent of bridgework necessary and the quality of your oral hygiene routine, a dental bridge may last as long as the natural teeth to which it is attached. A dental bridge may require repair or replacement if the crowns, false teeth or bridge itself becomes damaged. Most dental bridges remain functional for at least 10 years without the need for revision.

How do I care for a dental bridge?

Dental bridges do require a little extra attention, but should be cared for as you do your natural teeth. You should brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush at least twice a day and carefully floss around the crowns and false teeth. Regular check-ups and professional teeth cleanings are especially important with dental bridges. We will thoroughly review your dental bridge care guidelines with you prior to your dental bridge procedure.
