Dentures are perhaps the most common solution for replacing entire rows of missing teeth, but this does not make them the best. Typically, dentures are secured to the gums with adhesives, a technique that can allow for denture slippage and make tasks such as biting, chewing, and even speaking more difficult.
At the Pittsburgh office of Dentonics, Inc., our dentists offer targeted solutions that can meet the varied needs of individual patients. If you are a good candidate for dental implants, we would be happy to discuss the option of implant supported dentures. This option eliminates the risk of your dentures slipping and is often better at restoring a complete range of function.
Types of Implant Supported Dentures
There are two types of dental implants our Pittsburg dentists can use to secure your dentures:
- Ball-retained – commonly used with partials
- Bar-retained – better for complete rows of teeth
With ball-retained dentures, your partials will have balls affixed to the back that can easily be inserted into sockets on the dental implants. Bar-retained dentures typically require four dental implants to hold a wire to which full rows of teeth can be clipped.
