Risk Factors for Oral Cancer

Pittsburgh oral cancer screenings - DentonicsApril has been designated Oral Cancer Awareness Month by the Oral Cancer Foundation in order to raise awareness and promote screenings to increase early detection. More than 48,000 people die each year as the result of oral cancer. Early detection with oral cancer screenings in our Pittsburgh dental office can save lives.

Oral cancer is more common among older adults, particularly men, but more than 9 out of ten oral cancer cases are associated with lifestyle choices and behaviors that can be modified. Among these are:

  • Smoking
  • Chewing Tobacco
  • Alcohol Consumption
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Poor Diet

Because oral cancer screenings are so important, Dr. Frye perform basic screenings on all patients during routine dental cleanings and checkups. In addition, the VisiLite oral cancer screening system is available in our office. VisiLite was developed to help detect abnormal oral lesions and oral cancer before they are visible to the naked eye. The ViziLite system uses a low-intensity light, used with a special mouth rinse solution that makes any abnormal cells more visible.

If you would like to find out more about oral cancer screenings including ViziLite, please contact Dentonics using the form on this page or call 412-487-6910 today to schedule an appointment. We serve patients in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
